I have lectured all over the country, often addressing student groups at colleges and universities including, Bennett, Columbia, Dartmouth, Emory, Goddard, Harvard, Howard, Indiana University, the New School, New York University, Medgar Evers, Oberlin, Swarthmore, University of California at Davis and Wellesley.

I have also presented keynote speeches and workshops and moderated panels for many organizations, including, African American Women on Tour, American Society of Magazine Editors, Essence’s Women Who Are Shaping the World conference, the Essence Music Festival, the Kaiser Family Foundation, National Association of Black Journalists, National Press Association, National Lesbian and Gay Journalists’ Association, OutWrite and the Columbia Publishing Course.

In my speeches and lectures I draw on experiences from my life and as a reporter and author. I have addressed lots of topics, including “coming out,” HIV/AIDS in the black community, women’s health and wellness, LGBT workplace issues, parenting, the nuts and bolts of getting a book published, and surviving and thriving as a freelance writer.
